The OCMW Dendermonde was confronted with a number of infrastructural and programmatic challenges in the De Zonnebloem service center in order to provide its target audience with a qualitative service. De Zonnebloem local service center is located within the large-scale anonymous construction project by architect R. Van de Sompel from the mid-1970s, followed by a small green park.

During the redesign of the service center, attention was paid to visibility and planning requirements. As a counterweight to the large-scale residential block, the center is decoupled, this is done through the use of materials and design. The Service Center is crowned with a new articulated roof volume that offers a smart solution to the stated program. It replaces the dilapidated roof of the hall and provides additional spaces. The roof overhang on the park side provides local residents with a new sheltered spot and announces access to the service center.

When developing the plan, it was taken into account that the cafeteria, classrooms and hall can be used independently of each other. The room will be provided with sufficient daylight through spacious dormer windows.
After the renovation and expansion works, the local service center De Zonnebloem will be ready to fully serve the neighborhood and the associations now and in the future and to perpetuate its valuable place in community life.
